Complete These In Order

Follow this sequence — each certification builds on the last and opens more placement opportunities. Do Steps 1–3 first. You can apply to MedzRoute before completing them.

1
HIPAA Privacy & Security Training
START HERE FREE–$25
45 CFR §164.312 · ~1–2 hours · Online · Certificate issued on completion
HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. As a medical courier you will be in proximity to protected health information — patient names, specimen labels, medical records, and more. This training teaches you how to protect that information. It is required by virtually every hospital, lab, and healthcare organization in Maryland before they will accept a courier placement.
Why it matters: This is the #1 certification healthcare clients ask about. Getting it first opens the most routes and shows employers you take compliance seriously.
2
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens
REQUIRED ~$25
29 CFR 1910.1030 · ~2 hours · Online · Annual renewal required
This is a federal OSHA standard — not optional. It covers how to safely handle materials that may contain blood or other potentially infectious materials. As a medical courier transporting lab specimens, blood products, or biological samples, this certification is legally required before you can handle those materials. It covers personal protective equipment, exposure control, proper disposal, and emergency procedures.
Why it matters: Any lab or hospital sending biological specimens will require proof of this certification. Without it you are limited to non-biological deliveries only.
3
DOT Biohazard Transport (UN3373)
FEDERAL LAW ~$75
49 CFR Part 172 · IATA Category B · ~3 hours · Online · 2-year recertification
The U.S. Department of Transportation regulates the transport of biological substances. UN3373 is the classification for Category B biological substances — which includes most lab specimens. This training is a federal legal requirement for anyone transporting these materials. It covers proper packaging, labeling, documentation, and emergency response procedures. Failure to hold this certification when transporting regulated materials is a federal violation.
Why it matters: This certification is what separates a standard delivery driver from a certified medical courier. It opens the highest-paying routes including hospital-to-hospital specimen transport, NIH corridor runs, and biotech sample logistics.
4
Cold Chain & Dry Ice Handling
HIGHER PAY ~$25
Temperature-sensitive transport · ~1 hour · Online
Many biological specimens, biologics, vaccines, and cell therapies must be maintained within specific temperature ranges during transport. This training covers dry ice handling, temperature monitoring, packaging requirements, and what to do if a temperature excursion occurs. Required for routes involving refrigerated specimens, frozen biologics, or cell and gene therapy products.
Why it matters: Cold chain routes pay significantly more. Pharma, biotech, and NIH-corridor clients specifically require this for biologics transport.
5
Defensive Driving Certification
RECOMMENDED $25–$50
~4–6 hours · Online or In-Person · Certificate valid 3 years
Many larger healthcare organizations and hospital systems require couriers to hold a recognized defensive driving certificate before placement. This training improves your safety record — which matters for the auto insurance requirements of healthcare clients — and demonstrates professionalism to potential employers.
Why it matters: Increases your placement eligibility with hospital systems and large health networks. Also helps you meet the higher insurance requirements some clients need.
